At Pulmonary & Sleep of Tampa Bay we test for 72 allergens specific to the Florida region.
In the United States, there are 40 to 50 million people who suffer from allergies. Allergy symptoms can be caused by a specific response by the immune system after exposure to a substance often called “allergens†or “triggers.†The immune system’s job is to protect the body from outside threats causing it to attack these allergens as if they are invaders to the body causing allergy symptoms.
Symptoms can be obvious such as sneezing, coughing, runny nose, watery eyes, wheezing, and shortness of breath after exposure to allergens. Other symptoms can be chronic such as upper-respiratory infections, bronchitis, ear infections, headaches, cough, and fatigue. Allergies can also lead to other chronic disorders, such as asthma.
At Pulmonary & Sleep of Tampa Bay we use Greer Skintestor OMNI System which allows us to test for 72 allergens specific to the Florida region. We use both arms to perform this skin test. After the test, we schedule you a follow up appointment to discuss your results and treatment options with your provider.
There are a few different options when treating allergies: avoidance of allergens, medications, and immunotherapy. Unfortunately, avoiding your allergens may not always be a feasible option, especially for airborne allergens. In this case, there are various over the counter and prescription medications that can treat allergy symptoms. When avoidance and medications do not provide adequate relief, you can then try allergy immunotherapy. Allergy immunotherapy, or allergy shots, work by changing the way your body reacts to allergens to help control allergic symptoms for patients.
